Cabin in the Woods – The Thinking Man’s Horror

image

*Beware. There May Be Spoilers*

Overview:

The premise is the same old tired story. A group of beer and pot-fueled teens go off to the deep dark woods to stay at their friend’s cabin. That is where this same old tired story stops and the intriguing twists begin. This is Joss Whedon’s latest jump into the horror genre. Much like Whedon’s other ventures he changes the horror genre up just a bit and makes it his own. Sure, there are tons of shock cuts and make you jump type noises. Heck, even the opening title scene made me jump just a little. From that opening sequence though, we find out that this isn’t going to be any old murder in the woods film that we have seen time and time again. No, Mr. Whedon has a few tricks up his sleeve and he’s not afraid to use them.

Cabin in the Woods is a film that keeps you guessing until the actual end of the movie. Don’t worry though it ties up just about every loose end. Whedon gives you little tidbits of information throughout and never backtracks over the rules. This is something that usually infuriates me with horror movies. They will have set rules that need to be followed but will break them when it is convenient to kill someone off or if they run out of original ideas. Whedon pulls this off very well and keeps a realistic movie going throughout the experience. At least as realistic as a movie that has a guy getting gored by a certain mythical beast can be.

Characters:

The acting is another breath of relief. Most horror movies have the one dimensional characters that are so atrocious to watch act that you can’t wait for the blood to spill if it will just shut them up. In here we have actual likable people that you kind of feel bad that they are going to die a horrible bloody death. It is hard to write this and not spoil the bits if the film that I really loved but the way that Whedon shows why the characters are playing their stereotypes is quite clever and I think he deserves a couple claps just for that.

The cast is pretty good as well. Chris Hemsworth as the Curt “the jock”  didn’t strike me as odd but the bit of character depth we got from him was pretty nice. Of course this film was created back in 2009 so he wasn’t quite Thor yet. Just as we saw in Thor he can look the jock part but pull off a decent acting bit as well. The other characters were also pretty good on screen. My personal favorite is the weed toking smart guy named Marty and his one liners are what make the movie for me. Actually, throughout the movie are little quips and one liners that may as well be spoken by Whedon himself. They are what makes him an excellent writer and even better director. I can only hope that The Avengers will contain as much of this humor and he won’t be burdened with the weight of creating a “great comic movie” and will still be able to apply his usual touches that “Whedon Up” the movies.

As usual, Whedon also gives us some interesting female characters. The newly blonde Jules, played by Anna Hutchison, doesn’t do much to further the female role in horror films but she fills her role well. She sluts it up a bit and then is the first to die. Plain and simple. Kristen Connolly as Dana, much in Whedon’s tradition of having well-written “badass female” characters, gives us an unassuming main character that really helps carry the movie. She pulls off her role as the “virgin” character and give a very solid performance throughout.

Final Rating:

I give Cabin in the Woods 4 out of 5 stars and will recommend it highly. With the caveat that you still must enjoy people getting sliced to bits and drug around by bear traps. If you can deal with that then you will have a great time. I only wish that more writers and directors in the horror genre would take a note from this great movie and give us a little intelligence and make us not have to turn our brains off to enjoy a slasher flick.

Greensboro is Now Comic Books City, USA and Free Comic Book Day!

Sorry for the long time radio silence. Unfortunately entering my Senior year of college while working 40+ hours a week kills any time I would normally have to put towards this site. I will come back though. With a vengeance!

Until then… a little diversion.

Comic Nerds at City Council

I saw a neat article that focuses on our hometown Greensboro, NC and comics. Who would’ve guessed the two would ever combine and make the news?

It seems as though a bunch of comic book fans grouped together in costume and joined the city council on April 16th. One, a very well made up Green Lantern, and a second an equally well dressed Captain America. At first the city security would not let the Green Lantern in but it was met with a well sounded “Really guys? Come on? It’s Green Lantern…” and they eventually let him in to watch the proceedings. The whole thing was because of that sacred and special day that is coming up shortly (Free Comic Book Day for those of you that don’t know) and because of this the city council declared that every first Saturday of May they would change the name of the city to Comic Books City, USA. Of course I don’t see this going on any books anytime soon but at least they humored the comic geeks in the room and made me a little bit happier. Maybe they were worried about a little nerdrage going down if they didn’t appease the people there…

Here is the link for any interested in the actual story.

Anyways, I just want to encourage you all to go and help support your local comic book stores and give them lots of business. Not just on Free Comic Book day but become a regular shopper and subscriber if you can. I was saddened to see our local comic store here in High Point (GVE or Good Vs. Evil Comics) shut its doors last month. They were great guys and I hope they continue with the hobby in one way or another.

This is a really tough gig to run and I have been no exception. Even though I just run an eBay centered store right now I have been finding it extremely hard to sell much of anything recently. The economy is in the gutter and the first hobby that gets affected is the collectibles market. Because of this the prices for comics goes way down and you are lucky if you can even give them away some times.  Plus with eBay increasing their fees it has been tough to make any semblance of a profit on any product. I am still in love with the hobby though and I won’t leave it unless someone drags me away kicking and screaming.

So, this was a little long but I thought it would be nice to get a more personal post out there and see what you guys (and girls) think. In conclusion I have a couple questions to ask.

1. Where do you go to get your comics and where will you be on Free Comic Book Day? (May 5th)

2. What is your view on the economy and where do you see the comics and games industry going in the next few years?

3. Do you like posts like this more where I actually talk about a subject in depth or would you rather I just continue with the nerdy news and post funny videos?

Immortals Doesn’t Quite Live Up to the Hype

Immortals tried so hard to be better than just another 300 clone and in many ways it succeeded. However, I do not think the critics will praise what it did right but only what it did wrong. As a 3D action flick it succeeded in giving us plenty of fighting and the gore normally associated with that type of movie. However, this action took its good time getting to the screen. We have a few small spats happen but it takes a good 45 minutes before we finally have a good battle on our hands.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good exposition and storyline. I believe there are mindless action movies (2012 and anything involving Vin Diesel) but this isn’t that kind of movie. However, the story we do get is rather droll. Boy wants to protect his family but fails to do so. He is taken as a prisoner and then has to fight his way to avenge his family. In the process a bunch of other stuff happens.

I saw this in 3D which I normally do not do. I don’t hate the technology, I just hate what a lot of movies are doing with it. I can wholeheartedly say that this movie does it right. The 3D is used throughout the entire movie and it feels natural most of the time. Rather than having a 2D movie with a few special times when objects pop out to remind you that you paid an extra $4 to wear a pair of goofy glasses on your head you now have a seamless backdrop that makes you feel like you are looking off into the vast distance. I can’t wait to see more film makers use 3D to their advantage. Even during the fight scenes the 3D works really well and pulls you into this immersive world.

The actors were a mix of incredible (Rourke), bland (Cavill, and typical wisecracking sidekick (Dorff). Again, this mix just turned into a lukewarm blend that barely satisfied the palette. Overall, I enjoyed the movie but if I had not paid the extra money for the 3D show and seen it in a good theater with a great sound system it would not have been worth the time. This is the perfect example of how a good movie could have been better but just ends up fading away into oblivion.

I Palindrome I

image

In honor of today’s palindromic date I want to share a great band with an even greater song. So I will let They Might Be Giants sing a little song about Palindromes. Just in case you don’t know what a palindrome is here is a link to the Wikipedia.

Steve Jobs 1955 – 2011 RIP

First off, I have to say that except for my iPod Nano I have never owned an Apple product. This is not because of a dislike for the brand. In fact I use iTunes exclusively for my music and I think that it is a wonderful product. I just can’t afford to pay the higher prices for their great products. I hope to one day have some generation of the iPad. My wife bought me the Nano so I could record my group’s gaming session and I use it for that and listening to my music as well. I switched from using my Droid X2 to this for music only because I love the iTunes interface so much and spit in the face of the dribble that is Windows Media Player. With all that said even though I have very little experience with the Apple product I am still saddened by the loss of this great man. He made such an impact on the entire world with his company and visionary outlook. The world truly would not be where it is today if he had just given up at the start of Apple and didn’t struggle through like he did. So, to keep this short I just want to say that the world is a lesser place now that Jobs is gone and he will be forever remembered.

Captain America – A Surprisingly Well Executed Movie

Hey everyone! This is Sarah and I will be contributing from time to time here. I am so glad that my inaugural post is to tell everyone about a great movie. I went to see Captain America: The First Avenger at the midnight showing and it was definitely worth the lack of sleep.

Mix the Rocketeer, Inglourious Basterds, and good old-fashioned Marvel magic, and you’ve got some idea of how spectacular Captain America is. This will be spoiler-free, so relax. I didn’t bother with any 3-D mess, so I can’t comment on that. I can tell you that Chris Evans is surprisingly convincing, earnest and all around heroic. Tommy Lee Jones steals the show with his one-liners and the supporting cast is excellent. Hugo Weaving is perfect as Red Skull. I was truly surprised by the casting decision of Evans, I gotta hand it to Joe Johnston. He pulls wonderful performances from his actors. Including Stan Lee. Now we wait….scene after the credits? Yes, and its a knock out!

I know lots of people went to go see the movie and the box office sales show it. So, if you saw it and have a comment or a quick review please let us know and comment down below. Also, if you enjoyed the quick review let us know as well. This will  help motivate me to take some time and post more often. Thanks!

Photo of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd Released

New ‘Dredd’ Photo: Karl Urban Is The Law

Karl Urban as Judge Dredd

I am very happy about the tone set by this outfit. Granted it is a little dark to fully see the outfit in its glory but I think it looks nifty. I am very optimistic about Alex Garland’s portrayal and writing skills. 28 Days Later is one of my favorite movies ever and if he puts even a tenth of the grit from that movie into Dredd then it will be great. I am also a huge fan of Karl Urban and I want him to make this role shine like he did with Bones and Éomer. This is definitely a movie to keep your sights on.

Best. LEGO. Ever. LEGO Middle-Earth!

LEGO Middle-Earth: Yes. All of It.

This is amazing! It says that it took the team about a year to plan and build the entire thing. The amount of detail is just incredible. I especially love the Minas Tirith. I am so happy that there are mega geeks out there like this. Now excuse me as I try to recreate the Tardis from Dr. Who with my meager collection.

LEGO is Joining the RPG Ranks with Heroica

I have been a fan of LEGOs since I was kid. I loved building all types of giant structures and then knocking them down with a very loud crash. This would usually cause our dogs and cats to go scurrying from the room as fast as their little paws would take them.

This is why I was so excited when I first saw the Creationary types of games. Just recently I saw a post about how LEGO is throwing its hat into the RPG ring with their pseudo RPG-like games. Not a lot is known about the games except that they will include an inventory system, the combat system will be dice and inventory based, and the boards/maps will all be interchangeable and when you buy multiple games you can add them together.

There are four games currently planned and should be coming out in August of 2011.

Draida Bay – A water based adventures that includes a waterfall and bridge to cross.

Fortaan – A castle based adventure with locked doors and keys to open them.

Nathuz – An underground cave based adventure that includes giant bats.

Waldurk – a forest themes adventure with a windy path infested with giant spiders.

So far the games look very basic but that is what LEGO does best. None of the games they have released so far have been very intricate but they are still a lot of fun. This looks like it may be a good bit of lighthearted adventuring fun for the family.  I can’t wait to get copies of the games and see how they work.
